Caring for Wheels and Tyres – Brake Dust

If you’ve ever tried to clean your wheels you’ll know how difficult the task is – not to mention how hard it is to protect them from further contamination. Ironically, your wheels themselves are often the enemy, as the friction between their brake disks and brake pads creates brake dust – an insidious mix of materials such as carbon fibre, metal filing and glue that is rubbed off the brake pads and onto your alloys. Not only is it unpleasant to look at, but it’s highly corrosive and, thanks to the elements of glue, very hard to remove.

The solution to this problem is to find a way to either protect the alloys from any dust exposure, or to clean the wheels often enough that the metal filings in the dust never have a chance to oxidise and start corroding your rim’s protective coating – or worse, the rim itself.

To protect the alloys, you can use dust shields, which sit between the rim and the hub to protect the former from dust whilst still allowing air to flow through. Although these are a proven method of minimising dust exposure, be warned that they can compromise the aesthetics of your wheels, and are also generally unsuitable for high performance cars. An alternative to these is to buy specialist, low dust, brake pads. These can be made from a variety of substances, such as a kevlar or ceramic compounds, and some even improve brake performance as well as reducing dust.

The alternative to protective solutions is regular cleaning, which can be hard to keep up if you have a busy schedule – or just don’t feel like braving the cold outdoors! To be effective, you’ll need to wash your wheels at least once a week – ensuring you remove all brake dust – and re-apply protective coatings at least every three months. Although this sounds arduous it’s well worth the effort: just a few minutes’ washing every week will prevent corrosion kicking in and save you an expensive alloy bill further down the line.

If your car needs a little TLC, you can also phone Diamond Alloys to ask about our valet service – a great way to kick start a new cleaning regime!

Alloy Wheel with a Chunk Missing Repaired by Diamond Alloys

DSC_0192When an alloy wheel sustains damage this extensive it is easy for anyone to think it is beyond repair, but not Diamond Alloys!

These Porsche wheels had a sever chunk of alloy missing after damage sustained to the outer rim. A face weld repaired the damage which was then powder coated with the rest of the set of wheels before being treated to a standard painted refurbishment. The result is amazing with the damage completely vanished.

Damage like this and hairline cracks can occur when driving over pot holes, so if you notice loss of air in your tyres it is time to have them inspected, especially as it could mean a failed MOT!

Diamond Alloys repair and refurbish damaged alloys

“Only 4,000 miles on the clock and one careful owner”. This kind of phrase is liable to send a shiver up many a potential car buyer’s spine. When you buy a second hand car, particularly from a car auction, you have to accept that it could come with some flaws, no matter how carefully you look. Sometimes, obvious cosmetic defects will allow you to grab an absolute bargain – mainly because the owners don’t realise how quick, cheap and easy they are to fix.

Take alloys, for example. Whether the car has one, two or indeed an entire set of alloys that are dented, scuffed or scratched, it can make a car look tired and significantly reduce the sale value. The cost of replacing the alloys may have been off-putting for the previous owner, but you don’t have to make the same mistake. Diamond Alloys can repair and refurbish damaged alloys, allowing you to make a significant cost saving and get your second hand car looking as if it’s just rolled out of the dealership.

One of the services we offer is Diamond Cutting, which uses precision tools to remove only what is necessary from the rims. The process starts with a specialist pressure wash, which removes all dirt and allows us to better survey the condition of the wheel. After this, we cut the wheel to remove all the damage, leaving a smooth finish that shines. Finally, our technicians coat the rim with scratch proof lacquer and bake the alloy to seal the coating. When the alloys are refitted, we balance the tyre and restore it to the correct pressure, allowing you to drive away with peace of mind that your wheels are in the best possible condition.

Diamond Alloys have a service for almost every alloy damage: even if your alloy is buckled, for example, we have specialist hydraulic techniques that will straighten them out to their original shape.

Call our experts today to find out how our alloy repair service can make your second hand car look as good as new.

Diamond Alloys offer a top-quality repair and refurbishment service

Alloys can be both a blessing and a curse. When your alloys are immaculate, there’s no greater feeling than walking to your car and seeing them shine. If you’re unlucky enough to have a dent, scuff or scratch on them, however, it can ruin your vehicle’s appearance and be a niggling concern that ruins your enjoyment of the car.

great-customer-feedback

Whilst worth the investment, there’s no doubt that alloys are costly – and having to replace either one or a full set can be an unwelcome and badly-timed expense. Fortunately, Diamond Alloys offer a top-quality repair and refurbishment service that will get your alloys looking brand new for a fraction of the cost.

Our expert technicians use state-of-the art machinery that allows them to employ techniques like diamond cutting, which can be carried out on alloys up to 22” in size. Along with a range of other procedures, this means our team can repair kerbing damage, scuffed alloys, dents, scratches, scuffs and dings, and get your alloys back to pristine condition.

Take a look at our price grid to see just how much money you could save by opting for refurbishment rather than a new alloy. If you’ve got more than one scuffed alloy the cost-saving is even greater: we offer a range of exclusive deals to anyone needing four wheels repaired or refurbished at the same time.

There’s no need to despair if your alloys have become damaged – simply call our team for expert advice on the best service for you. Their quote will include wheel balancing, tyre removal, re-fitting and car parking. They can also collect your car from anywhere within London and the Home Counties for a small additional fee.

Acid Dip Alloy Wheels Removes Corrosion

At Diamond Alloys we believe in offering our trade and retail customers a superb finish. Achieving a good finish can depend a lot on the preparation of the wheel before it is painted. Many wheels come to our London Alloy Wheel refurbishment centre with a lot of corrosion which is caused by water and especially saltwater attacking the alloy when the protective lacquer layer is damaged from kerbing or chips.

These pictures indicate what alloy wheel corrosion looks like, which can become quite advanced if not addressed quickly and will most likely contribute to air loss on your tyres. However, you don’t have to outlay a huge amount of cash on purchasing new alloy wheels. Although this damage looks bad it can be easily removed simply by placing in an acid dip bath. The alloy will have to remain in acid for a period of time, depending on how excessive it is, and our trained technicians will be able to evaluate this. Acid is dangerous so we do recommend you let experts like ours carry out this task.

Once the corrosion has been removed from your alloy wheels it is washed down and then proceeds to our preparation room where any damage is repaired. After this stage we would powder coat each wheel to ensure a smooth an even surface is achieved before applying a colour or a diamond cut.

Applying lacquer is a very important stage as it gives the alloy a protective layer to help stop water from accessing the metal and causing further corrosion damage. The difference in the look of your alloy wheel will be stunning, not only will they look good but without loss of air your car will be more efficient and perform better too.

For more information about our range of services, simply call our helpful team on 0845 370 8881 or email us pictures of your wheels here. We are confident that we can make your alloy wheels look better, guaranteed.

Diamond Alloys Powder Coat Machine Process

steveAt Diamond Alloys we aim to always keep our technology and working practices bang up to date by upgrading our machinery and training staff with new and improved techniques.

Earlier this year, we upgraded our powder coat machine to improve the finish we can achieve and to shorten lead times, so that we can not only offer great looking refurbished alloys wheels but an even better service. The process offers a smoother finish and a quicker bake time, not surprising since the oven heats to an impressive 230℃!

The upgraded machine involves the following process:

  • Degas the alloys at 230℃+ for a minimum of 15 minutes
  • Turn the heat down to 200℃ – 210℃ as coating begins
  • Prime the alloy wheel in the spray booth
  • Bake the powder coated alloys for 5 – 10 minutes when last wheel goes back into oven
  • Remove wheels once baking is complete and cool to 80℃
  • Add the base coat to colour
  • Flash off 5 – 10 minutes before putting back into oven
  • Put back into oven for 10 – 15 minutes ready for clear coat
  • Apply Clear coat
  • Put last wheel back into oven and bake for 10 – 15 minutes
  • Remove from oven and cool

If you want to get a really great looking set of alloy wheels, we highly recommend a powder coat process is used. For more information on what services we can offer for your alloys, simply call us on 0845 370 8881 or get a quick quote here.

Interview with Diamond Alloys New Tyre Fitter, Andrei

diamond-alloys-new-tyre-fitter-andrei1. What do you do at Diamond Alloys?
I am a Tyre Fitter ad Diamond Alloys. I remove the wheel and check for any damage and then I prepare the wheels for refurbishment. Once the alloy wheels have been refurbished I prepare them ready to be fitted back and rebalanced. This is all part of the service at Diamond Alloys and included in the price (we don’t have hidden costs!)

diamond-alloys-new-tyre-fitter-andrei-2. What did you do before?
I worked as a mechanic and tyre fitter.

3. Why did you decide to work into the motor industry?
I used to have my own garage, I enjoyed it very much but wanted to be part of a bigger team but still wanted to work in the automotive industry.

4. What’s the best part of your job?
Diamond Alloys is a great place to work and I enjoy the job itself! It’s great to be surrounded by a great group of lads.

5. If you could drive any car, what would it be, where would you drive it and who would be sitting next to you?
I would choose a Ferrari or a BMW for a solo trip in Europe.

6. Why should customers tyres not be replaced on their own?
If they have the right equipment and know what they are doing it is fine to do yourself, otherwise I would recommend you let us do the work for you. As I said, at Diamond Alloys, we offer to our customers removal, refitting and balancing for FREE!

7. What would you recommend to keep tyres in good condition?
I would suggest they check their tyres every 5000 miles and they make sure the air pressure is correct. Low tyre pressure is, fortunately, easy to fix, and we’ll give you a free pressure check every time you book a refurbishment with us.

8. How often should tyres be topped up with air?
Before and after every long journey.

9. What gives you job satisfaction?
When a customer is happy with their refurbished wheels.

Protect your rims with alloy wheel rim bands

standard-alloy-wheel-rim-bandsAdding rim bands to your alloy wheels will help protect them from damage often caused by parking too close to kerbs. The added bonus is they look great too, adding a touch of colour which can tie in with the colour of your car.

Take a look at the standard painted alloy wheels which were just completed at London based refurbishment centre Diamond Alloys. The red rim bands make a striking contrast to the standard grey painted finish applied to the alloys.

Made from stretchy high strength silicone rubber, these rim protectors are tear resistant and fit snugly around alloy rims to protect against kerbing and damage often caused by potholes. alloy-wheel-rim-bandsThese rim bands won’t damage your alloys and feature 5 gripping ribs to stop them slipping out while driving.

Available from Diamond Alloys in 9 attractive colours, their universal fitting allows them to fit wheels from 15” up to 22”. We can fit these for you at Diamond Alloys FREE as part of a full 4 wheel alloy wheel refurbishment. Fitting where refurbishment is not taking place is £15 plus VAT per wheel. For safety reasons fitting can only be done at our workshop. Call us now on 0845 370 8881 and find out how you can get these rim bands fitted to your alloys for as little as £50 for a set of 4!
