Bodyshop Magazine

We recently announced on our news page that we had featured in the August issue of Bodyshop magazine. Here is the article in full.

After spending a decade as a car painter with Solus, Phil Murdoch, director of Diamond Alloys, knew he was destined to ‘go it alone’. Following his decisive move, Phil spent a short period of time offering a mobile alloy wheel repair service. However, the ever-increasing demand and various limitations associated with such a service lead Phil to instigate a more permanent business in the heart of Northolt, Greater London. One year of extensive building work and a few months of trading later, bodyshop spent the morning catching up with Phil and his team – which coincidentally includes bodyshop’s own 2008 young painter of the year, Zak McLaughlan.

One thing is certain when visiting Diamond Alloys in Northolt – they are not looking for a short-term over-night success. Extensive market research provided the confidence to invest £500,000 in the build, and gave director, Phil Murdoch the patience to wait a year for the building and installation work to be completed. And so far it is proving worth the wait. The business now boasts six full-time staff, operates five and half day weeks and Phil already has ideas to develop and evolve the business.

Phil went into the car painting industry straight from leaving school. After a respectable 10 years as a painter, he decided to start Diamond Alloys. “I decided to go it alone and do my own thing,’” said Phil. “I started by going into mobile alloy wheel repair but felt that had “imited’ potential. I also soon recognized the audience and their demands were different – I wanted to be the person to offer a service to match those requirements. To do that I needed a permanent base so I took the decision to invest time and money in order to do things properly.”

Specialist

David Utting Engineering supplied and fitted the vast majority of the bespoke specialist equipment. The state-of-the-art refurbishment centre includes Phil’s pride and joy – a bespoke laser precision cutting machine. A spray oven, mixing room and cooling rack were also included in the fit out. The spray oven has the capacity to ‘hang’ 16 wheels at any one time and is specifically designed to ensure no overspray contaminates other units. The set-up of the spray oven offers the potential and often necessary capacity to turnaround all 16 wheels in 45 minutes – efficiency is vital. All this equipment allows Diamond Alloys to offer: diamond cutting, painting, colour coding, powder coating, customisation and straightening services.

The investment into such specialist equipment during the current economic climate did not concern Phil. In fact, it has served to re-iterate his original train of thought. Phil said, “l felt that if it was the case we were going into recession it wouldn’t affect those people who buy £200,000 plus vehicles. Therefore the opportunity to repair alloy wheels, especially in the prestige sector, is ever present. But it’s not just that top end of the market – virtually all cars today have alloy wheels so the potential is huge.” At present Phil estimates around 70% of cars on the road have diamond cut alloys – a huge market by anyone’s standards and with very little competition nearby, Diamond Alloys have exploited a clear gap in the market.

Prestige

Although mainly working with prestige brands, Phil made it very clear they are happy to work on any car from a Ford right through to Ferrari, Lamborghini and Bentley. To date, only the Bugatti Veyron has posed an issue, as no one apart from approved centres are allowed to remove/refit their tyres.

Most of Phil’s work comes via prestige vehicle dealerships and leasing companies. Private customers are also a top priority with many willing to pay whatever it takes to get the look they desire and as Phil suggests some can be quite extravagant. A smattering of bodyshop work also contributes to volume of throughput.

One business Phil works closely alongside is Signature Car Hire – a prestige car hire facility a stone’s throw from Diamond Alloys HQ. Signature Car Hire has been using Diamond Alloys for all its alloy wheel refurbishment work since it opened earlier this year and has been very impressed with the results. Dee Bhatia, Director at Signature Car hire said, “Our cars consist of some of the most premium marquees and models in the world and must remain showroom condition at all times, so it is important our alloys are refurbished to the highest standards at all times as this reflects on our brand and business. We have always been impressed with Phil’s quality of work, and also his speedy and professional service. We are especially impressed with their diamond cutting service, which we use as standard for most of our rental vehicles.”

Requirements

To keep the business side of things straightforward, Diamond Alloys run a set price menu dependent upon the process and requirements of the customer. The specialist team also have the skills to create customised alloys to a client’s specification. Bringing such talent to the business is bodyshop’s own 2008 young painter of the year, Zak McLaughlan – who is responsible for all things ‘paint’. ‘Zak was my apprentice at Solus so we’ve known each other a long time,’ said Phil. ‘I know his standard of work is exceptional and to have him onboard is a big asset to the business. He, along with the rest of the team are great to be around.’

Phil openly admits he ‘likes a challenge’ and will always ensure the client receives the highest possible standard of finish in the quickest possible timeframe – something Diamond Alloys pride themselves on. Phil has found that it is ‘how quick, and not how much’ that is most important to his clients, and that is the biggest driver for the business. As a result, the average industry diamond cut turnaround time of four to five days has been drastically reduced to 24 hours at Diamond Alloys. The business has seen promising customer retention rates over the few months of trading and he believes this is down to the key turnaround time.

Precision

In order to achieve the precision and high quality of finish, a clear process is adhered to. Initially new units or alloys are quality checked on arrival. Diamond Alloys do not deal with wheels that suffer from structural or crack damage for the safety benefits of their clients. The process can then begin with a thorough cleansing in the aqua blast system designed to eradicate all surface contaminants. Once clean, the alloy is coloured using waterbased paint that is delivered ready mixed in any bespoke colour required. The wheel is then ready for diamond cutting. To protect from scratching, after the cut, a wheel is then immediately lacquered twice in the spray oven and placed on the cooling rack. The lacquer is designed to adhere to bare aluminium – as Phil describes ‘a bit like a resin’.

The alloy is subsequently polished and undergoes a quality control check before the tyre is refitted or a new once sourced, at the request of the customer. Always aiming to deliver the highest standards, the wheel is subject to a digital balancing and a final quality control check before being personally delivered back to the customer.

Powder coating is another popular process Diamond Alloys offer. This is especially suited to older alloys and is also more effective for complicated jobs. Currently the process is outsourced but it is something Phil is considering for the future. Turnaround times can be a little longer with powder coating due to the process involved. After being chemically stripped and shot blasted to remove residues, the wheel is powder coated in three stages – priming, colour application and lacquer finished. The powder melts onto the wheel providing a full cover, perfect for alloys with multiple spokes.

Future

Never one to become complacent, Phil is consistently forward-thinking into the future. Speaking about Diamond Alloys’ reputation, Phil said, “It can take years to build it, but days to ruin it”, which he certainly has no intention of doing. Currently, the centre is seeing an average of 100 wheels a week being refurbished. Within the next two months, Phil would like to see this figure increased to 150 – but the dreams do not stop there. When demand increases enough, which the team are confident it will, then Phil plans to expand into the unit next door.

There are also big ideas to run a 24 hour shift, so turnaround time is even quicker. As Phil explained, “The biggest driver for us is volume and the demand for quick turnaround times”. The refurbishment centre has been custom designed and built to ensure the flow of work from stripping back to finishing is efficient. In the future, Phil would ideally like to implement two systems – fast track and powder coating. By running an effective 24 hour shift and fast track system together, Diamond Alloys will see their weekly targets sore.

Attracting a Diverse Customer Base

So who, exactly, is alloy wheel repair for? With 70% of road vehicles sporting diamond cut alloys, the answer is ‘almost everyone’.

At present, most of the work that Diamond Alloys does is with prestige brands, ensuring that the quality work such marques demand is met with gusto and most importantly, with a quick turn around time. However, as the number of cars out on the roads sporting alloy wheels increases then the service that Diamond Alloys offers, fast high quality and cheap alloy wheel refurbishment, extends to everyone. Whether you drive a Maserati or a Mini, Diamond Alloys offers the best possible service, and all done in just 24 hours.

Great for consumers, the Diamond Alloys service is extremely desirable for vehicle dealerships and leasing companies. A quick working time and reliability are key components of Diamond Alloys, where investment in the latest laser cutting machinery and high quality staff has produced an industry leading standard of consistency. Diamond Alloys have worked very closely with prestige hire facility Signature Car Hire, who keep coming back thanks to a commitment to the highest standards of alloy wheel refurbishment and the speedy, professional service that Diamond Alloys offers.

The Oven Process

The Diamond Alloys spray oven is a pressure controlled environment closed off from the rest of the centre. Specially ventilated, the spray oven is used by Diamond Alloys for painting with our bespoke ready mixed water based paints, and also for applying dual layers of lacquer immediately after cutting, to protect the alloys against wear and tear.

Our specialist technicians can colour mix to almost any shade required to bring your alloys back to life, or even to give them a brand new look. Opt for a traditional silver grey, or go wild with a bright and funky colour or paint effect. Whatever you want, we aim to do it!

Diamond Cut BBS Mahle Alloys

We cut alloys wheels of all shapes and sizes, and we just had to take some snaps of these alloys after they had received their Diamond Cut refurbishment as they had such a striking pattern not often seen. We really think the Diamond Cut finish really worked well on this alloy, and the client was certainly very happy with the finished result.

Getting to Know The Boss – Phil Murdoch

Phil Murdoch has been working with cars since he left school. Starting as a painter, Phil worked in this position for ten years, building experience and knowledge until he was ready to move on. Phil then moved into the alloy wheel refurbishment business, going it alone and taking his expertise on the road with a mobile alloy repair service. However, he quickly realised that a mobile business was inherently limited, and that there was perhaps a greater opportunity out there for the taking.

After extensive research, Phil decided to invest £500,000 into a new business, Diamond Alloys, with a permanent alloy refurbishment centre. Targeting the prestige car market, Phil was banking on the luxury car community being above the credit crunch to bring in reliable high quality business. “Knowing that no matter what level of service is being offered, the customer is always looking for a good deal and a fast service,” Phil made these a focus of Diamond Alloys, which has continued to gain customers and grow, with a healthy future ahead of it.

The Diamond Alloys Van

We take pride in everything we do at Diamond Alloys, including making sure we turn up to collect and delivery your alloys in style. Pictured here is our van complete with the sparkling Diamond Alloys Logo. We even managed to grab a couple of the guys from the refurbishment Centre to pose for the camera, some taking it very seriously and stopping to check they were looking every bit as good as the van.

You will be able to spot our van easily, with the huge Diamond Alloy wheel design emblazoned on the side of the van, along with our prestigious name and contact details. Diamond Cut – Attention To Detail

Diamond Alloys has quickly become known for its excellent alloy wheel refurbishment services which include Diamond Cutting, Standard Refurbishment and also Customisation.

When it comes to Diamond Cutting, our customers get the best. Our technicians are fully qualified, highly skilled which means each alloy gets the attention it deserves to ensure the finish is first class. Whether it’s a little scuff, dent, or chip, our Diamond Cut machine pin points exactly where the damage is and how much cutting is needed for the alloy to look brand new again.

As pictured above, these alloys wheels are the results of a Diamond Cutting process which is extremely precise; a finish which cannot be done by hand. The Diamond Cutting machine uses laser technology for damage you can’t see. Once the data has gone through the machine, the Diamond Cutting process starts by slowly and gradually coming closer and closer to the alloy and cutting off an incredibly thin layer of the alloy. It then moves back and goes ahead with the procedure once again making sure any damage isn’t missed.

The machine spins the alloy at very high speeds with a rotary cylinder that holds the alloy in place. On the end of the machine, an incredibly precise sharp blade is located which has an electric mechanism beneath it for the machine to slide in and out smoothly, assuring the alloy is not damaged by the high speed cutting of the blade.

Laser technology is the latest cutting-edge technology on alloy wheel refurbishment equipment, so it was with no hesitation that we chose the latest and best laser technology available. The laser helps the machine to be as accurate as possible by scanning the whole alloy before any movement in the machine pin pointing the exact locations of the damage.

Our clients vary from big companies such as Bentley, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, to the usual accidental curbing by an individual driver. No matter how big or small the job, we strive to make sure your alloys don’t leave our workshop until they look perfect.

This was a worldwide award meaning Zak was up against many other countries, yet despite this Zak took the gold medal.

Zak McLaughlan started out as an apprentice at Solus until Phil Murdoch, Director of Diamond Alloys, recognized his talent and took him on as an apprentice. Diamond Alloys was recently featured in the Bodyshop magazine where Phil speaks about Zak and says “I know his standard of work is exceptional and to have him on-board is a big asset to the business. Phil says “Zak is one of the best around, and it is an honour to have one of the best to work with us” which clearly shows how proud our Director is of Zak.

Diamond Alloys – As Featured In BodyShop Magazine

At Diamond Alloys, we are always looking for different ways to bring in audiences so we were delighted when we were contacted by Bodyshop Magazine for an article to feature in their August 2012 edition.

Mark Hadaway, editor of Bodyshop, came to visit the Diamond Alloys team at our West London Alloy Wheel Refurbishment Centre to carry out an in depth interview with Diamond Alloys Director Phil Murdoch. Mark was keen to highlight all the services we offer and how we established and built our business to becoming number one in the Alloy Wheel Refurbishment industry so quickly.

One of the key questions Mark had for Phil was how Diamond Alloys was started and what motivated him to want to create a company that offered a premium service and a range of high quality finishes. Phil said. ‘I started by going into mobile alloy wheel repair but felt that had ‘limited’ potential. I also soon recognized the audience and their demands were different – I wanted to be the person to offer a service to match those requirements. To do that I needed a permanent base so I took the decision to invest time and money in order to do things properly.’

Mark was also keen to quiz Phil about paint technician Zak McLaughlan and why he was such a key member of staff to be on board. Phil said “Zak was my apprentice at Solus so we’ve known each other a long time,’ said Phil. ‘I know his standard of work is exceptional and to have him on board is a big asset to the business. He, along with the rest of the team are great to be around.” Zak won the Medal of Excellence for the Best Painter in 2008; his speciality painting techniques and bespoke custom finish services in addition to the 24 hour service we offer on Diamond Cutting are all reasons why Diamond Alloys is already standing out as the best on the industry.

We were delighted with the article, especially as Mark clearly outlined how it’s not just our highly trained and experienced technicians that are excellent, but it is also our service which is winning over new customers on a daily basis.
